Accompanying the latest mural on our Outdoor Gallery, and remembering the ten year anniversary of the 2011 Tesco Riots, we have produced a limited edition screen print, in collaboration with artists Kesdrawsfights and Radley Cook.
Their illustrations are combined with spray-painted backgrounds making each piece totally unique. There are two major variations - sprayed red & blue background texture, or the same colour combinations with the addition of text from the original protest stencils used in the campaign against Tesco a decade ago.
"I'm really happy to have painted an anniversary mural on the PRSC wall as I have already depicted this event on one of my Bristol Riot prints. People often talk about the event when they see the picture, so it's nice to think that this image might spark some useful conversations about rights around protest and the current political climate. The world moves so fast that we often fail to learn from history. Perhaps this mural might help people to reflect on the importance of being heard." - Kesdrawsfights
In April 2011, after a year of campaigning against a proposed Tesco supermarket, right in the middle of a street that had been (and still is!) proud of its independent traders, there were occupations of the site and street protests as the campaign came to a head, and the Tesco sought to open.
Police responded to claims from bailiffs that the squat opposite had been making petrol bombs by bringing dozens of riot police to what had been a generally peaceful protest (hence the quote on the mural, from an article at the time “Last time I looked we were dancing and having fun! What the f**k happened!?”).
The PRSC always seeks to emphasise and amplify community voice, and feel that the way protests periodically become fights with the police is a symptom of failures within society. Between the widespread lack of education about how our democratic systems are supposed to work, the common feeling that we’re under incredible time pressure, and the feeling that even when we do engage, our voices are not really taken into account, large swathes of the population are disenfranchised. If you do not hear, you will feel!
"I wanted to create something special to coincide with the installation of the mural recognising 10 years since the resistance of Tescos in Stokes Croft, on the PRSC outdoor gallery wall. It was important to me that, unlike the mural, the artefact was a permanent and unique piece that people could take home with them. The limited edition print, much like the mural is a collaboration between Kesdrawsfights, object... and myself. It is an artwork created especially for the PRSC created as a continuation of the mural." - Radley Cook
