In April 2011, after a year of campaigning against a proposed Tesco supermarket, right in the middle of a street that had been (and still is!) proud of its independent traders, there were occupations of the site and street protests as the campaign came to a head, and the Tesco sought to open.
Police responded to claims from bailiffs that the squat opposite had been making petrol bombs by bringing dozens of riot police to what had been a generally peaceful protest; from an article at the time “Last time I looked we were dancing and having fun! What the f**k happened!?”.
