"We are not beautiful, we are not ugly, we are angry"
In November 1970, a group of feminist activists stormed the stage disrupting the Miss World beauty contest at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
At that time, Miss World was a British Television institution, but the protest by the Women's Liberation Movement marked the beginning of the end for the world’s most famous beauty pageant.
Minutes after compère Bob Hope cockily quipped on the parade being a ‘cattle market’, viewers watched him shaken and confused as the stage was invaded. Throwing flour bombs the women chanted: "We are not beautiful, we are not ugly, We Are Angry." The movement flourished for a decade, and sparked hundreds of feminist groups all over the country.
The Artist: Bev Milward
Bev Milward is an established maker working in porcelain. She is interested in the longevity and sentimentality of ceramics, how they infiltrate our lives and can be used as a tool for communication long after leaving the maker.
Her distinctive landscape collaged pieces have a strong narrative in common with her porcelain work. Her makers mark is a key which is featured on the front of the current British Studio pottery dictionary.
